Brisbane five-piece Sunset Junkies have been flexing their new line-up and musical direction this year with singles Inertia and Sunset Junkie. Before the anticipated release of their album next year, they are releasing their third single Apollo & Dionysus. I had a listen to their newest song, which they've shared with Roo’s Live Experience readers HERE.
Starting out with rock drums and a thick riff, this track instantly makes me think of Prince. Byron’s soulful vocals are lifted by the backing vocals of Ellie Jane. This heavy, powerful rock track takes a softer turn in the bridge, providing contrast and another musical point of interest.
The two disparate parts of this song blend to tell the story of songwriter Byron Short’s internal struggle with his own demons. The lyrics draw on poetry, literature and philosophy, and are particularly informed by ‘The Birth of Tragedy’ by Nietzsche and Short’s own experience of an internal battle between a love of music and a love of illicit substances and alcohol. "It’s about the notions of conflicting sides of the psyche being best represented by Greek gods Apollo and Dionysus. The trauma that spawns a song becomes catharsis when working musically." Short said of his creative process.
Sunset Junkies is comprised of a revamped line-up of Byron Short – guitar/vocals, Daniel Trickett – drums, Jeremy Klysz – bass, Richie Thayil – keys and Ellie Jane – vocals.
I asked Short about working with his new line-up and why he loves it so much. "Every person in the band inspires me to put in one hundred per cent. It’s so powerful - I can’t not let loose. They all blow me away – they’re top-tier people and I feel very lucky."
Sunset Junkies have been working with co-producer Stefan Fuller and mixing engineers Ryan McCambridge and Grammy Award Winner David Bottrill (Tool/Peter Gabriel/Muse).
Apollo & Dionysus will be launched live on Saturday, December 15th at Crowbar where Sunset Junkies will join Archetypes in supporting Like Thieves– event details HERE.
